In the early days, the page length on the web was limited due to dial-up download times. These days, you are right: it is irrelevant. Plus breaking up the article over pages hurts its chances on Google.
I still use the ‘continued on’ in rare cases: namely, catwalk stories that have too many images. But if we are talking about an article with eight to ten pics, or fewer, then there are fewer excuses, especially in the blogging era, to break it up.
It is why the mouse scroll wheel was invented.
